The Encaustic Technique

The encaustic is a technique which has been known and used since the antiquity. The Romans used to apply it on board. Pliny the Elder describes already in the 1st century the use of encaustic on marble as a technique which already then was considered ancient.

It seems that this technique started to develop when they painted the boats with a layer of wax in order to make them waterproof and protect them against the salt. In times of war color was added to the wax…

The encaiustic technique I learned from my mother Heidi Krementz, who is an artist as well. Until today we experiment in our two workshops with this fascinating material and then tell and show each other our new discoveries every time we see each other.
